Hikikomori

About six months ago, I read Michael Zielenziger’s Shutting Out The Sun. Overall, it was an interesting read, and I highly recommend it to any Japanophile, person living in Japan or anyone interested in contemporary social problems.

As a non-Japanese, to understand Japanese society is a difficult task, even for someone fluent in the language and aware of the customs. Therefore, seeing minor Japanese errors in SOTS made me a little skeptical of the book’s authenticity. Regardless, many of the issues discussed in this book will be familiar to expats in Japan. Sometimes those on the outside can best see the problems occurring within.
